You all ROCK!
2019 has been an amazing year for my cartooning dream. There are so many reasons to be thankful on this national day of thanks known as Thanksgiving. To celebrate, I would like to run down my own “thanks givings”….
I have received more support this year from my readers than I have received over the course of the past 10 years. Your personal messages with words of support have been pouring in nearly every day. The expressions of love and appreciation at my comic con appearances has been awe inspiring. It was only three years ago I came off a huge monetary loss, appearing at show after show where no one knew who I was…. and I was ready to throw in the towel. Hard work pays off. I was relentless, pressing on, and I found an audience growing like a wild fire with each passing show. Flash forward to 2019 and I have turned a profit at EVERY show. I have even appeared at a few very bad shows this year, and I still pulled a profit at each one.
How do you make money at a show where only a handful of attendees show up? I managed to pull in readers at every show who love my comic strip and who support my dream by investing in real art. This was the first year where I never lost money at a comic con. One of my goals this year was to not lose money at any of my appearances. I had made a commitment to myself to strongly evaluate my comic con appearances in 2019. This evaluation, if resulting in too many losses, could have resulted in 2020 only receiving a few appearances from myself. I needed this year to be a turning point or else I was going to have to pull all funding away from show appearances and place it into digital marketing campaigns.
Not only did the success convince me to do more appearances in 2020, but it lured me into investing in digital marketing in 2019. The profits were so good that I have put all of my earnings back into Search Engine Optimization and into Social Media Ad Campaigns. Your patronage at my comic con appearances has allowed me to expand my audience BEYOND the comic con campaigns and into a massive CYBER campaign.
I am thankful for each and every one of you.
I am also thankful for the support of my peers in Artist’s Alley. Honestly, this was the first year I have felt like an equal to the amazing talent displayed at these massive shows. To actually be friends with legends like Doug Hazlewood, Guy Gilchrist and Greg Peters is amazing. I hope to connect with many more established cartoonists soon. I am really hoping to add a few syndicated newspaper cartoonists to my circle in 2020. To do that, I need to attend The Rueben Awards in 2020. To attend this event, I must get full membership status in the National Cartoonists Society. I need two members in good standing to vouch for me though…. so attending the Rueben Awards may be a few years away still.
Who knows, maybe next Thanksgiving, I will be telling you all that I am thankful because I managed to get full membership into the National Cartoonists Society! Gotta figure out how I can get a few members in good standing to back my dream. The tricky part is friending these cartoonists online without sounding all needy…. lol…. I have a lot of work ahead of me.
