I hope everyone is staying safe during these crazy days we are living through. There is nothing more important to me than the safety of my readers. Please take this Corona Virus scare seriously. Wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and water every time you’ve touched a shared surface. Keep your distance from everyone. I am praying for each and everyone of you during this unbelievable year.
On to fun stuff!
The national Cartoonists Society Announce the Reuben Award Nominees!
This is the OSCARS for cartoonists. It is the Wrestlemania for dreamers. Winning a Reuben cements your legacy. Getting nominated ain’t chopped liver either. Just to be nominated for a Reuben is one of the items in my bucket list.
Here is a list of the 2020 nominees and my predictions…
I never get this one correct. I love Michael’s work. I have been a huge fan of his for years. His attention to detail and texturing amazes me. I will go with Michael Ramirez.
MAGAZINE / NEWSPAPER ILLUSTRATION
This is SO tough. I love Peter Kuper’s work… but Tom Richmond is my hero. Since Mad Magazine has folded issues with new content, I feel the attention will go to Tom. He deserves it too. I will go with Tom Richmond.
SZYMON BIERNACKI and MARCIN JAKUBOWSKI (Production Design) – Klaus
CHRIS BUTLER (Character Design) – Missing Link
NELSON LOWRY, SANTIAGO MONTIEL and TREVOR DALMER (Production Design) – Missing Link
I loved the character designs for Missing Link. So original and so much detail. I am going with Chris Butler.
CECILIA ARANOVICH (Director) – Harley Quinn | So You Need a Crew
PAUL RUDISH and EDDIE TRIGUEROS (Writers, Director) – Mickey Mouse | Carried Away
GENNDY TARTAKOVSKY (Creator, Writer, Director) – Primal
Okay, I have to admit something. I am a huge super fan of Genndy. This guy has more talent in one hair on his eyebrow than I have in my entire body. I aspire to be Genndy. Genndy Tartakovsky wins or I riot.
DAVE BLAZEK – LOOSE PARTS
MARK PARISI – OFF THE MARK
WAYNO – BIZARRO
Not fair. They nominated all three of my favorite panel cartoonists. Eeny meeny minie moe….. Dang this is difficult. Mark has been on fire for the past 18 months with Dave on this tail. Wayno is just pure genius. When all is said and done, I am picking Mark Parisi.
I love Amy’s work! She has amazing style. Hands down, I go with Amy Hwang.
ADVERTISING / PRODUCT ILLUSTRATION
I love Luke’s style. Such a talented guy! I am going with Luke McGarry.
GIDEON KENDALL – MegaGhost
STAN SAKAI – Usagi Yojimbo
MATT SMITH – Folklords #1
This is another tough category. Success in this category is TOUGH! Comic book readers are so particular and picky. MegaGhost was a fun read and SO original. I am going with Gideon Kendall.
HARMONY BECKER – They Called Us Enemy
MAREK BENNETT – Civil War Diary of Freeman Colby Vol. 2 (1893)
COLLEEN DORAN – Snow, Glass, Apples
All three graphic novels were outstanding on their own, unique merits. For me, Snow, Glass, Apples was the utter standout. I pick Colleen Doran to win this. I would be surprised if the win was not by unanimous decision.
ONLINE COMICS – LONG FORM
STEVE CONLEY – The Middle AgesE
MAARIA LAURINEN – Phantomland
ALEC LONGSTRETH – Isle of Elsi
I love Steve’s work. I pick Steve Conley!
ONLINE COMICS – SHORT FORM
I love Jim’s sense of humor. Jim never disappoints!!! Jim Benton all the way!
KEITH BENDIS – The Devil’s Diary
STACY CURTIS – Karate Kakapo
LINCOLN PEIRCE – Max & The Midknights
I am a HUGE Big Nate fan. Lincoln Pierce runs away with this one!
BRIAN CRANE – PICKLES
PAUL GILLIGAN – POOCH CAFE
JEFF PARKER & STEVE KELLEY – DUSTIN
My dream job! Awe, one day…. I am a huge Pickles fan. Brian lost a few papers this year and his fans came unglued. He has proven how awesome Pickles is. Brian Crane blows away the competition for the win…. even though Pooch Cafe and Dustin are two of my favorite strips.
LUKE MCGARRY – Kidtown
LAURIE TRIEFELT – World of Wonder
JOE WOS – Mazetoons
I find Joe’s work a-MAZE-in’… so, Joe Wos wins.
SUSAN CAMILLERI KONAR
Rick is another one of my heroes. I can only pick Rick Stromoski for the win. Susan is a close second… but I have to go with Rick.
JOE BLUHM (Storyboard, Design, Director) – Pinocchio – A Modern Retelling
NATHAN MAZUR (Animator) – Pancake Rocking
BILL PLYMPTON (Co-Director, Animator) – Trump Bites | Russian Roulette
The message within Pinocchio – A Modern Retelling is so strong. I cannot see this not winning. Joe Bluhm is the winner. Wee deserved too!
Those are my picks. We will soon see how wrong I am across the board!!!!
