I wanted to draw some obscure for my INKtober sketch cards this year. The odd-ball subjects seem to sell quickly at my comic con appearances. How much more obscure can you get than Eugene the Jeep from Popeye? I remember seeing “Jeep” in the old Fleischer cartoons. “Jeep” was so weird!

When it comes to Popeye cartoons, you had two distinct eras. Era one were the Dave and Max Fleischer years which ran from 1933 to 1942. In 1941, Dave and Max Fleischer were actually removed in 1941 from the project by the studio. Famous studios took reigns of the cartoons in 1942. The first 14 cartoons from Famous Studios were in Black and White just like all of the cartoons from the Fleischer Studios. Cartoons moved to color at Famous Studios in November 1943. Even as a kid, I preferred the Black and White cartoons from Fleischer Studios.

The tone of the humor was darker in the Fleischer Studios cartoons. Famous Studios watered down the product, making it more kid friendly. The birth of Television in our country and the fact that kids were a profitable audience for advertisers caused all cartoons to get watered down. It was also important that cartoons were cranked out quicker so as the years flew by, so did the reduction in the quality of the animation and the stories.

Eugene the jeep appeared in three of the Fleischer Studios films. Eugene the Jeep appeared in a ton of the other Popeye cartoons, but for me he was not as dark and interesting as he was in the three cartoons from the Fleischer Studios.

One little unnecessary fact, Eugene the Jeep is the school mascot for Northeast Dubois High School in Dubois, Indiana, and South Webster High School in South Webster, Ohio, although the Jeep for Northeast Dubois is blue and gray, while South Webster’s is red instead of yellow. An old elementary school in Wheatland, Indiana also used the Jeep as its mascot, but this school was consolidated, and the symbol is no longer in use.

Please SHARE to support my dream. The more people who see my posts, the better my chances are of succeeding in this highly completive field of cartooning.
